We’re sure every one of you has tasted that nasty flavor of burnt cotton in your coil at least once. Trust me, that's not something you want to vape on. When a coil burns, not only is the taste disgusting, but the coil itself is permanently ruined and you can only throw it away. A burnt coil means both a horrible vaping experience and unnecessary expenses. But don't worry, the Vawoo team will tell you what you can do to prevent burning your coils. Below, we'll go over the most common things you need to watch out for to avoid getting that burnt taste.
Keep Your Tank Filled Up
If the e-liquid level in your tank is running low, it might not properly saturate the wicks. Many coil heads need the e-juice to be at a certain level to reach the wicking ports evenly. When there's minimal contact between the e-liquid and the cotton, absorption slows down. And when your juice level gets really low that's when you start running into burnt cotton problems.
The easiest fix is to keep your tank topped up. When you notice the performance getting worse and the flavor fading, it's probably time to drain what's left and refill with fresh e-juice. Sure, you could rotate the tank periodically to help the juice saturate the wick, but that's not very reliable, especially when you're running low. So just refill regularly.
How Often Should You Change Coils?
Your coils will eventually go bad. Unfortunately, they don't come with an expiration date stamped on them. How long a coil lasts depends on a bunch of different factors. Even if you've never had a dry hit, a coil will eventually burn out after extended use and start tasting bad. There are several parameters I recommend considering when trying to estimate how long your coil will last.

Prep Your Coil Before Use
It's really important to fill your coil before you start vaping. If you skip this step, you risk burning the coil before you've even started. You can either manually prime the wick or fill the tank with e-juice and let it sit for 5-10 minutes so the cotton can absorb it.
Priming the wick means you manually wet the cotton before installing and using the coil. Most coils have an opening at the top and holes on the sides where you can see the wick. To prime it properly, make sure the wick is saturated with e-liquid just 3-5 drops should do it. Just make sure all visible parts of the cotton are moistened. Use those side holes and drip a few drops of e-juice into each one. Just be careful not to overwicking or you'll end up with leaking.
If you choose to just fill the tank with e-juice, don't forget to let it sit for 5-10 minutes so the liquid can soak into the cotton wick. If you do this, you don't need to manually prime it as well.
When you're using a fresh coil, the wick is bone dry. For proper vaping, the wick needs to be fully saturated. This prevents burnt hits. If the coil isn't saturated, there won't be enough e-liquid to absorb the heat when you fire up your device.
Don't Chain Vape
Some of you might recognize this when you just keep hitting your vape over and over without any breaks. "Chain vaping" is what we vapers call it.
Did you know that by not giving your device a break, you're actually risking burning your coil? This happens because you're vaporizing the e-juice faster than the wick can re-saturate, so it simply doesn't have time to absorb enough liquid when you're continuously vaping. Sounds weird, but the wick actually dries out after prolonged chain vaping.
The solution is pretty simple: if you notice the flavor starting to fade, that's a sign your coil isn't getting enough juice and you're heading toward a burnt hit. Time to give your vape a quick break.
Check Your Wattage Settings
Make sure you're within the wattage range that's indicated on your coil. If you've set your device outside the correct range, the coil will burn out much faster. If your wattage is too low, you'll have a higher chance of leaking because you're pulling more than the device can vaporize.
Check if There Enough E-Liquid in Your Tank
Make sure you're not running your tank completely dry. It's a good idea to refill regularly so you don't run out. Some atomizers also require the liquid to be at a certain level to reach the wick properly. So if your tank level is low, it can lead to problems and burn your coil if you're not paying attention.
The simplest solution is to refill your tank regularly. If you don't want to mix flavors, just empty the tank first or switch to a fresh tank with your new flavor.

Use E-Liq with Higher PG Ratio
All e-liquids consist of a mix of PG (Propylene Glycol) and VG (Vegetable Glycerin). PG has a thinner consistency than VG, which means it gets absorbed by the wick more easily.
VG is thicker and harder for the wick to absorb. That said, some tanks can and should be used with higher VG content. Sub-ohm tanks usually handle higher VG really well.
Use E-Liquid with Less Sweetener
If you're vaping e-liquids with sweetener, the sugar content can caramelize. This makes the wick sticky, and a sticky wick can't absorb juice properly. This will cause your coil to burn.
Use E-Juice Without Cooling
Most e-liquids with cooling agents also pack a lot of sweeteners to balance out the flavor, and this can shorten your coil's lifespan.
